The UAE’s Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) has awarded a Dhs205m ($55.8m) contract to UAE-based WESCO to enhance power transmission infrastructure across emirates and strengthen interconnection with the GCC grid. The project includes constructing three substations and 132kV transmission lines in Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah, along with expanding the existing Al Nuaimi substation in Ajman. The infrastructure will integrate with the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) grid, which already connects the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait. Oman joined the grid in November 2023. WESCO will handle design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning. The project is slated for completion in Q1 2025. FEWA director general Mohammed Mohammed Saleh stated the project aligns with national energy security goals and supports economic growth by ensuring reliable power supply. It will also reduce operational costs and carbon emissions through efficient grid management. The GCC interconnection grid, operational since 2009, enables emergency electricity sharing and commercial power trade among member states. Its infrastructure includes 800 km of transmission lines and substations with a 1,200 MW transfer capacity.
